But salads are not only good for lunch, side dish or quick dinner. They also make a good healthy dessert. I know some people don’t think fruits are desserts. But when your fruits are very juicy and sweet I don’t see why not fruit salad couldn’t be called a dessert.

I called this recipe Summer Fruit Salad, because it’s perfect for summer with all these fresh fruits and the flavors are really so good that you won’t miss those cakes full of sugar.

What I love about fruit salads is that you can actually use any fruits you have in your kitchen, like this version of a Quick Easy Fruit Salad Recipe. And fruit salads are awesome as a quick healthy snack for your kids and even for yourself on the go.

You can bring it to your work, picnics, potlucks and parties. It’s easy to make and it takes no time to be ready. You just need to chop everything, add in a bowl and mix altogether.

For this fresh fruit salad recipe I didn’t add any honey or maple syrup because my fruits were already sweet enough. What I did instead was to squeeze some fresh orange juice and pour over the fruit salad. Then, I topped it with Greek yogurt and chopped mint. Mm… So good! Hope you give this recipe a try!

I love packing this up with in-season fruit like kiwi since I always have them on hand.

You’re like me and have a ton of kiwi, try my Kiwi Chia Pudding and Kiwi Pineapple Parfait. Another fruit packed meal I love is this Roasted Blueberry Oatmeal and Kale Blueberry Pineapple Salad.

Ingredients to make Summer Fruit Salad

  • Grapes — There are a ton of grapes to choose from! I highly recommend you buy seedless grapes to save yourself from having to pick out the seeds. Red grapes or green grapes are a great option. For more specialty ones, try cotton candy grapes as they’re super sweet and taste like cotton candy! When selecting grapes, they should be firm and plump. They shouldn’t look wrinkly and should be intact on the stems. Avoid getting grapes such as concord grapes where the skin is extra thick.
  • Blueberries — Make sure you select ripe blueberries. They should be plump and deep blue with a dusting of gray on the surface. If there’s a red-ish hue, they are not fully ripe and will likely be tart. If you do not have blueberries, try using blackberries instead.
  • Strawberries — Strawberries do not continue to ripen once picked from the vine. This means, that for sweet strawberries, you’ll have to select the reddest ones you can find. If they’re not bright red, they are not as sweet. Also, check that the leaves on the strawberries are fresh and bright green.
  • Mango — There are a lot of mango varieties and they do not have the same indication of ripeness, so make sure to double-check online! However, they should smell aromatic once ripe. Look for mangos that are heavy for their size and have smooth, blemish-free skin. They have a delightfully creamy texture that you can replace with bananas if you do not have mangos.
  • Kiwi — While you can eat the skin on kiwis, I like to peel them for fruit salad. You can check if a kiwi’s ripe by pressing it gently with your thumb to see if it yields to the pressure. If it’s hard, give it more time to ripen.
  • Orange juice — This adds additional sweetness to the fruit salad. You can freshly juice your own or buy bottled orange juice. Buy pulp-free juice.
  • Lime juice — I recommend using fresh lime juice as it tastes more bright and flavourful than bottled lime juice. Bottle lime juice sometimes has a bitter aftertaste to them. You can also lemon juice if this is what you have on hand.
  • Honey — Again, for extra sweetness. If you cannot have honey, try swapping for maple syrup.
  • Greek yogurt — Greek yogurt adds a boost of protein and gives the fruit salad a creamy texture.
  • Mint — To garnish. You can also use basil or lime zest and lemon zest.

Instructions to make this Fruit Salad

Prepare the Ingredients

  • Combine all the fruits in a large bowl. Mix everything together until the fruit is evenly distributed.
  • In a small mason jar, add all the ingredients for the dressing. Mix all together. pour on top of the salad.

Chill and Serve

  • Cover and refrigerate until chilled.
  • Just before serving, add some fruit salad in a glass and top with 1 tbsp of Greek yogurt, one cherry and garnish with mint.

Recipe Tips

  • Wash the berries with some vinegar water before using them as you don’t peel the skins. This makes sure the berries are clean. Dry them thoroughly before using them. If the fruit is damp, you’ll end up with a pool of water at the bottom of your cup!
  • Make sure you dice the fruit into small bite-sized pieces to make eating the fruit salad easier.
  • Don’t use frozen fruit for fruit salad! Frozen fruit will become soft and mushy as they thaw, so make sure to use fresh fruit for the salad.
  • Make sure all the fruit are ripe. There’s nothing worse than enjoying the fruit salad and suddenly biting into an overly tart piece of fruit.
  • Feel free to swap the fruit for your favorite fruits such as raspberries, peaches, mandarin oranges, tropical fruits or even fall fruits like apple and pomegranate seeds. It’s an easy recipe that you can make year-round!
  • Giving the fruit salad time to chill in the fridge will allow it to “marinate” and the flavours will meld together better.
  • I like to serve the fruit salad recipe in a clear glass so you can see the mixture of colourful fruit.
  • I topped my fruit salad with Greek yogurt, but you can top it with everything you have on hand such as sour cream, cool whip, tablespoons of vanilla pudding mix, flakes of coconut, nuts (walnuts and pecans) and even mini marshmallows for the kids.
  • I don’t use canned fruit for this recipe because usually they’re loaded with artificial sugar, but if this is what you have on hand or prefer, go for it.

How to store

If you have leftovers, store it in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. It does taste best on the first day, so try to enjoy the salad as soon as possible. While you could freeze the fruits for later use, I wouldn’t freeze and thaw fruit salad. If you have too much fruit salad left, you can always toss everything into a blender to make a smoothie! Or you can also make a fruit co*cktail with it.
