Trump wants Black and Latino support. But he's not popular with either group, poll analysis shows (2)

WASHINGTON (AP) — As he prepares to accept the Republican nomination for the third time, Donald Trump has promised new efforts to expand his coalition — and, in particular, to win over more of the nonwhite voters who largely rejected him during the 2020 election.

But an AP analysis of two consecutive polls conducted in June by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that about 7 in 10 Black Americans have a somewhat or very unfavorable view of Trump, as do about half of Hispanic Americans. While both groups do see Trump a little more favorably than when he left office in 2021, their opinion of him is still more negative than positive.

New York law couldn't be used to disarm reservist before Maine shooting, Army official says

  • AP

An Army nurse practitioner who evaluated a reservist who later killed 18 people says he couldn’t use New York’s red flag law to disarm the man because he was not a New York resident. Maj. Matthew Dickison told an independent commission Thursday that Robert Card was displaying psychosis and paranoia in July when he evaluated Card at an Army hospital. Dickison concluded Card was unfit for duty and shouldn’t have access to guns. He says he was surprised when Card was released two weeks later from a private psychiatric hospital where he had been receiving treatment. In October, 18 people were killed when Card opened fire at two locations in Lewiston, Maine.

Melania Trump will attend the Republican convention in a rare political appearance, AP sources say

  • By JILL COLVIN and MICHELLE L. PRICE - Associated press

Former first lady Melania Trump will attend the Republican National Convention next week in Milwaukee. That’s according to two people familiar with her plans who spoke on condition of anonymity before full details are released. It will be a rare public appearance for a woman who has been largely absent from the campaign trail as her husband, former President Donald Trump, runs to return to the White House. It remains unclear whether she will deliver a speech or have any formal role in the proceedings. The news was first reported by CNN.

Senator calls out Big Tech's new approach to poaching talent, products from smaller AI startups

  • By MATT O'BRIEN and SARAH PARVINI - AP Technology Writers

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden is calling for action against a new practice big technology companies are using to swallow up the talent and products of innovative AI startups without formally acquiring them. The Oregon Democrat sent a letter Friday urging antitrust enforcers at the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to act against "undue consolidation across the industry.” The practice general involves a smaller startup sending its key employees to a larger company after they license its products or datasets.

Hungary's Orbán faces backlash over his rogue 'peace mission' meetings with Western adversaries

  • By JUSTIN SPIKE and LORNE COOK - Associated Press

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has made a Trumpian vow to “Make Europe Great Again” during his country’s six-month presidency of the European Union. As a first step last week, he astonished his allies by making secret trips to Russia and China for talks with two of the bloc’s primary adversaries. The EU’s longest-serving leader, who has endorsed former President Donald Trump and is known to have the warmest relations with Vladimir Putin in the bloc, has embarked on what he calls a “peace mission” aimed at brokering an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. But his recent secret meetings with Western adversaries have provoked a backlash and prompted attempts to contain Hungary during its six-month EU presidency.

Finnish lawmakers approve controversial law to turn away migrants at border with Russia

  • AP

Finnish lawmakers have narrowly approved a controversial bill that will allow border guards to turn away third-country migrants attempting to enter from neighboring Russia and reject their asylum applications. The government’s bill was meant to introduce temporary measures to curb migrants from entering the Nordic nation. It is a response to what Finland sees as “hybrid warfare” from Moscow, accused by Helsinki for funnelling undocumented migrants to the two countries’ border. The temporary law, valid for one year, was approved by 167 lawmakers — the minimum needed for it to pass in the 200-seat Parliament.

Emergency crews recover bodies in Gaza City as negotiations continue in Egypt

  • By WAFAA SHURAFA - Associated Press

Dozens of bodies collected throughout Gaza City’s Tel al-Hawa neighborhood arrived at Al-Ahli Hospital on Friday morning while civil defense workers said they continued to unearth the dead from destroyed streets and buildings. Crews are recovering bodies scattered in the neighborhood’s destroyed streets and buildings, where entire families appear to have been killed by artillery fire and aerial bombardment and about sixty have been recovered, the director of Civil Defense in Gaza told The Associated Press. The scenes in Tal al Hawa mirror those in other Gaza City neighborhoods from which Israel’s military has withdrawn in recent days.

Man sentenced to life over plot to kidnap, rape and murder UK TV personality Holly Willoughby

  • AP

A man has been given a life sentence for plotting to kidnap, rape and murder Holly Willoughby, one of Britain’s most high-profile television personalities. At Friday's sentencing hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, around 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of London, Judge Edward Murray told Gavin Plumb that he would have to serve a minimum term of 16 years before he can be eligible for parole. Murray said Plumb, a 37-year-old former security guard, had an “unhealthy obsession” with Willoughby and that he posed a serious threat to all women.

Bradley as Ryder Cup captain raises questions whether U.S. task force plan is over

  • +4
  • By DOUG FERGUSON - AP Golf Writer

Keegan Bradley's selection as the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain was a surprise in another way. It could signal an end to the plan the Ryder Cup Task Force came up with 10 years ago. The idea was building continuity. Captains would be groomed as an assistants and then stay on as an assistant when their time was over. Bradley hasn't been part of the Ryder Cup in 10 years. Justin Thomas is on the Ryder Cup committee. He says all that matters is who is the best fit for captain, not whether the captain fits a certain mold.

Czech brewer Budvar's net profit up 46.3% in 2023 as it recovers from loss of the Russian market

  • AP

The Czech brewer Budvar, which has been embroiled in a long legal dispute with U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch over the use of the Budweiser brand, says it increased its net profit, output and exports in 2023. Budejovicky Budvar NP said its net profit jumped 46.3% last year to 293.8 million Czech crowns ($12.6 million). It attributed the result to successful development of its markets at home and abroad, which helped compensate for the loss of the Russian market. Budvar halted exports to Russia and Belarus following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Budvar says it exported 72% of its 2023 output, with exports increasing by 4.6%. The company sells beer in some 70 countries.

Pakistan's high court gives more seats to imprisoned ex-PM's party

  • AP

Pakistan’s top court on Friday found that the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan was improperly denied at least 20 seats reserved parliament, in a significant blow to the country’s fragile governing coalition. The ruling by the Supreme Court was hailed by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which was previously excluded from a system that gives parties extra seats reserved for women and minorities in the National Assembly or lower house of the parliament. Though the verdict is a major political win for Khan, it will not put his party in a position to oust the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who came into power following a Feb. 8 election that Khan allies say was rigged.

Nepal's prime minister loses a confidence vote forcing him to step down

  • By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA - Associated Press

Nepal’s prime minister has lost a vote of confidence in parliament after losing the support of the largest party in his coalition government which would now force him to step down from office. Pushpa Kamal Dahal failed to get the support of more than half the members of the lower house of parliament, on Friday which was required to win the vote. He had to move a confidence motion in parliament after his main ally in government decided to withdraw their support to the government last week and join hands with another party to form a new alliance. Dahal became prime minister in December 2022 when he formed a governing coalition after inconclusive general elections in Nepal.

The three women, Carol Hunt, 61, and her daughters Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, were killed at their home in the quiet residential neighborhood of Bushey, northeast of the capital, on Tuesday evening. JPMorgan Q2 profit rose 25% as bank cashed in holdings in Visa

  • By KEN SWEET - AP Business Writer

JPMorgan Chase says profits jumped sharply in the second quarter as the bank cashed in billions of dollars of its holdings in Visa Inc. But the bank’s results were also helped by higher interest rates, as well as consumers who seemed to still want to spend, despite geopolitical and economic uncertainties. The nation’s biggest bank by assets posted a profit of $18.15 billion, up 25% from a year earlier. A significant part of JPMorgan’s results was a $7.9 billion gain on its stake in Visa. Without that, profit fell compared with the year-ago quarter.

704 wickets and out: England great Jimmy Anderson bows out of test cricket in win over West Indies

It’s 704 wickets and out for Jimmy Anderson. The most prolific fast bowler in test history bowed out of international cricket by helping England complete a win by an innings and 114 runs over the West Indies at Lord’s. The 41-year-old Anderson’s 188th and last test ended with him taking 3-32 in the West Indies’ second innings as they were dismissed for 136 a little over an hour into the third day’s play. One of those wickets came on Friday when Anderson enticed an edge behind off Joshua Da Silva with a delivery that seamed away. It was classic Anderson.

Germany says it won't be intimidated by Russian threats after report on alleged assassination plot

  • AP

The German government says it “won’t be intimidated” by Russian attempts to undermine the country’s support of Ukraine, but is refusing to comment on a report that Moscow planned to assassinate the chief executive of a leading defense company. CNN reported Thursday, citing five unidentified U.S. and Western officials, that American intelligence discovered earlier this year that Russia planned to kill Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. It said the U.S. informed Germany, whose security services were able to protect Papperger and foil the plot. Neither Rheinmetall nor the German government would comment. An Interior Ministry spokesperson said Friday that Germany takes “the significantly increased threat from Russian aggression very seriously.”

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in New Jersey's special congressional primary

  • By ROBERT YOON - Associated Press

Democrats running to replace the late U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. will go before voters in a crowded and contentious special congressional primary where three candidates survived legal challenges to have them removed from the ballot. The winner of Tuesday's primary will represent the party in a Sept. 18 special general election to serve out the remaining weeks of Payne’s term in northern New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 6 to 1 in the district. The outcome of that election will likely further narrow an already fragile Republican majority in the U.S. House.

Barbora Krejcikova will face Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final on Saturday. Both women are surprised they've made it this far. Krejcikova had a bad back and just a handful of wins this season before Wimbledon. Paolini had never even won a match at the All England Club in three prior appearances. They both won their semifinal matches Friday in three sets. Krejcikova ousted 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Paolini outlasted Donna Vekic in the longest Wimbledon women’s semifinal on record. Neither finalist has participated in a Wimbledon singles title match before. Their meeting ensures there will be yet another new champion. Seven women have won the singles title in the past seven editions.

A Dutch court rejects a claim the government is evading export ban on F-35 parts to Israel

  • By MOLLY QUELL - Associated Press

A Dutch court has rejected a claim from human rights organizations that the Netherlands is dodging a court order to stop sending F-35 fighter jet parts to Israel which could use them in Gaza. The Hague District Court ruled Friday that the groups had not shown any evidence that the Dutch government was ignoring the earlier ruling. Earlier this year, an appeals court told the Dutch government to halt the export of F-35 fighter jet parts to Israel. It cited a clear risk of violations of international law if they are used in strikes on Gaza. The government appealed to the Supreme Court but halted exports in the meantime.

Yamal and Spain meet England in the Euro 2024 final. It's the best team against the most resilient

  • By STEVE DOUGLAS - AP Sports Writer

Spain and England will meet in the European Championship final in Berlin on Sunday. Spain has been the best team in the tournament and is on the brink potentially of a new era of success because of a teenage wonderkid in Lamine Yamal, an outstanding midfield and a tweak in philosophy making a typically possession-based more direct. England has been little more than a survivor at Euro 2024 and has limped to the end through big moments and resilience. Spain is seeking a record fourth Euros title. England is into a second straight European Championship final and has another chance to end its long wait for a first major men's title since the 1966 World Cup.

European Union says X's blue checks are deceptive, transparency falls short under social media law

  • AP

The European Union says blue checkmarks from Elon Musk’s X are deceptive and that the online platform falls short on transparency and accountability requirements. They're the first charges against a tech company since the bloc’s new social media regulations took effect. The European Commission outlined on Friday the preliminary findings from its investigation into X, formerly known as Twitter, under the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Services Act. The rulebook, also known as the DSA, is a sweeping set of regulations that requires platforms to take more responsibility for protecting users and cleaning up their sites. Regulators said the blue checks constitute “dark patterns” that are not in line with industry best practice.
