Made these for a Mad Men party with Cara Cara oranges. Delicious! We didn't use the club soda.

Margaret

This is my favorite drink. I add 1/2 jigger Patron Citronge (orange liquor). It adds alittle more orange flavor. Just right in my book.

Phil

I've tried so many variations on the classic Old-Fashioned recipe, and this is my absolute favorite way to make the drink: 1 sugar cube, Angostura bitters, dash of water, Rye whiskey, orange peel (zest only), Luxardo cherries. Soak sugar cube w/bitters, add a splash of water, muddle until sugar is dissolved. Add the orange peel and muddle to release oils. Fill glass with ice and add 2 oz. rye whiskey (adds a lovely peppery spiciness). Garnish with cherry. THE best!

This is becoming my favorite co*cktail. I would add that a splash of water during the muddle can help the sugar dissolve before adding ice cubes. I would also will stress the quality of the cherry--Marasca or Almarena cherries are key. If someone gets out a maraschino cherry to garnish, they don't take this drink seriously. And s/he should not be your friend or bar of choice any longer.

The Old Fashioned has been my favorite drink for years. An old bartender once gave me his secret for it: instead of angostura bitters, use a dash of orange bitters and a dash of Aztec chocolate bitters. For a slightly stronger flavor, replace the chocolate bitters with black walnut bitters.

Wow. Who knew Rye could be so good? A splendid co*cktail and as a Bourbon lover trying Rye in this Old Fashioned version it could be my new fav, in particular with Cara Cara orange. I didn't drink Old Fashioneds until exactly four years ago when discovering the Robert Simonson recipe (I recommend it) on this site which was so easy to do for a no-skills home mixologist trying to dull election pain. Now more skilled and celebrating optimism for the next four years, this new recipe is 'it'.

Lynne

Make this an Irish old fashioned by adding a shot of Benedictine with it.Cara Cara oranges are the bomb, add an extra slice muddled in if you want. Our favorite drink.

I like to muddle the cherry along with the orange slice to give it more flavor. I prefer Rye Whiskey to Bourbon, as I find it to have a much smoother taste and finish.
