Great work discussing the future of AI at Oregon State University College of Business and at Oregon State generally from one of the talented student writers at the Daily Barometer Austin Thornton. So much more to come and big questions to wrestle with going forward, including impacts on energy use, thorny ethical questions about training data, and how we can guide students in the ethical use of the technology:

Oregon ranked #44 in the nation for public funding of higher education. “'You have a situation in Oregon right now, where the vast majority of Oregon’s public university presidents are from outside of the state and we’re shocked,' said Eastern Oregon University President Kelly Ryan, who took over in 2023. 'We’re shocked at what we found. And we’re also in wonderment about how we’re supposed to get our work done in such a drastically underfunded environment.'"

Wow! Oregon State University College of Business has been recognized by Vogue as a top 10 program for design--they particularly called out our appeal for students who are interested in sustainability and activewear, and our alums placement with nearby Nike, Adidas, and Columbia Sportswear. We are so proud of our program, our incredible faculty, and our amazing students!

Pretty sure they've worked out all those pesky #bias issues in #genAI...oh wait... (prompt: please create a photorealistic image of a group of ethnically and racially diverse cheerleaders with a variety of body types, sizes, and shapes forming a human pyramid). This is why I use images when I talk about the problem of bias in generative AI. While it can at times be challenging to see the bias in text, it is quite easy to see it here! I tried this in Midjourney and DALL-E and had the same type of response. I could not get away from this type of image until I eliminated the word "cheerleader." This is an interesting example to use with a group--ask them first to picture a cheerleader. Then show & discuss this image. Remember, #genAI reproduces existing biases--it didn't come up with this image out of nowhere.

Heading home from a fantasticAACSBconference on AI. Grateful for the opportunity to present with and learn from the brilliant Dr. Sandeep Krishnamurthy. A few takeaways to share: 1) no one has this figured out; 2) faculty need support to engage in innovation—in time & resources, and in a culture that celebrates the imperfection that comes with trying something new; 3) we are all new to this new way of thinking—students and faculty alike—lead with vulnerability around your own anxiety, hesitation, and excitement; 4) jump on the speeding train now. It’s not stopping.

What one thing do you wish administrators at your college or university would do to better support faculty during this time of AI disruption and transformation? (Assume we have limited resources, but really do care and want to support you!)

What do you do when you get the letter you've been waiting over a decade for? 1) Buy new Oregon State University swag; 2) cry; 3) wonder how you can possibly thank all the people that have helped you get to this incredible milestone; and 4) realize that isn't possible, but you darn well better try.
